Ferndale Farmer’s Market
Posted by DQ in Uncategorized on May 6, 2010
June 5th – October 30, 2010 – Saturdays
Certified Organic Farmer’s Market
at Main and Shaw Streets

A great source for fresh veges from Camp Grant Ranch and other local area growers, with a nice variety of fresh herbs, baked goods from the Loleta Bakery, free range lamb and fresh chicken eggs from She Spins For EWE in Rio Dell, live plants (perennials, shrubs and a few trees), along with wool yarns, tools and some hand knitted items, also from She Spins For EWE. One can get hooked on fresh chicken eggs very quickly, so beware!

Julia Roper, with horticultural plants from Forest Lakes Nursery, told me that her hostas with flower buds did NOT get eaten by the snails. This means that they are definitely snail resistant. Not completely immune to snail damage, but the snails seem to choose a lot of other things before munching on these particular hostas.

Just so you know … it’s all available at the Ferndale Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, June – October.

Russ Park

Fetid Adder's Tongue
This is the most interesting picture I could find of Russ Park. I’m sure there are others, perhaps even in my own collection, but this one is exquisite. It was taken by Michael Kauffmann. If you want to know more about this beautiful little flower, visit Michael’s blog (blog.conifercountry.com). There is more info on Russ Park as well.
Article below by: Ken Mierzwa
Russ Park is a 105-acre preserve located at the southern edge of Ferndale, where the Wildcat Hills (part of the coast range) rise abruptly above the nearly level residential areas. Located within easy walking distance of Main Street and of much of the city, elevations in the park range from about 60 feet to 480 feet above sea level. An extensive [3 mile] system of foot trails is maintained by volunteers. Read More »

Egret in the Wetlands
Ferndale nestles in a lush, green valley, surrounded by the pasture lands of thriving dairy farms. During the winter Egrets frequent the meadows where Holstein, Jersey, and Guernsey herds graze. More than 450 species of birds have been spotted in Humboldt County. During the Christmas bird counts, the Ferndale area has been consistently in the top 20 of the more than 1,600 Audubon counts held annually in North America.
