Who Was Who?
A Walk Through the Ferndale Cemetery
This is the title of the Ferndale Museum’s Summer fund Raiser. On July 18 at 1:30pm, costumed actors, stationed at cemetery grave sites, will tell the stories of some Ferndale people who are buried here. Visitors will stroll the cemetery for eight different presentations.
The subjects will be Ferndale’s first twelve settlers, local Indians, drowning victims, Confederate soldiers, crimes of passion, the Francis family, the Hindley family, and the Christiansen family. The presenters will be Tom Ford, Trevor Christiansen, Charlie Beck, Bruce and Lois Keller, Erin Manker, Kelsey Manker, Mary and Gene Whitney, and Linda Moreland. Mary Whitney and Linda Moreland will be telling their own family stories–the Christiansens and the Hindleys.
The cost is $12.00. Tickets will be limited, so make sure to get yours before they sell out. They will be available at the Museum, Rings Pharmacy and Lentz Dept. Store. Please call the Museum at 786-4466 for more information or to reserve your tickets.

Hello, Debi,
If you noticed an initial G on a gravestone inside an emblem, it means the Masonic Order. If you saw some blue, short posts with the initials GAR, that stands for Grand Army of the Republic–the soldiers of the Union in the Civil War. It was a veteran’s organization. If you saw NSGW, it stands for Native Sons of the Golden West.

While touring the cemetery last week, we noticed markers throughout but did not understand their meaning. Veteran made sense to use, but there were two more G?? and another with initials we couldn’t figure out. Could you please solve this mystery for us? Thanks!
